Course Requirements: Spring 2005
- Attend all lectures (or make prior arrangements to view them)
- Read two books: John Mearsheimer's The Tragedy of Great
Power Politics and Walter Russell Mead's Special Providence:
American Foreign Policy and How it Changed the World;
also read selections from the 9/11 Commission Report. Chapters
from the 9/11 Commission Report can be
found online at http://www.9-11commission.gov/report/index.htm
- Two book reviews each of no
longer than 3 pages. See the details for the first
paper or first paper for
repeat students of this class;
and the second paper.
- Students are expected to follow the news on foreign policy
by reading online The New York Times and/or The Washington
Post
- Exam - 50 multiple-choice questions covering lectures and readings.
- Other recommended books on U.S. foreign policy: Richard
A. Clarke, Against All Enemies; Steve Coll, Ghost Wars;
Stefan Halper and Jonathan Clarke, America Alone, James
Mann, Rise of the Vulcans; John Micklethwait and Adrian
Wooldridge, The Right Nation.
Grading
This course is graded pass-fail.
To pass, both your two book reviews must be satisfactory and you
must answer at least 70% of the final exam questions correctly.
Final Exam
The final exam will held in Wheeler
Auditorium on Thursday, May 19, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.
The exam will consist of 50 multiple choice questions. Please bring a No. 2 pencil
and Scantron sheet.
