Sir Ralf Dahrendorf: Sanford S. Elberg Lecture in International Studies; Institute of International Studies, UC Berkeley

Sir RALF DAHRENDORF is Warden of St. Antony's College, Oxford. Born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1929, he studied Classics, Philosophy, and Sociology in Hamburg and London. From 1958 to 1963 he was a Professor of Sociology in Hamburg, Tübingen, and Konstanz. His political career then led him into the Federal German Parliament and Willy Brandt's first government as a Minister of State in the Foreign Office. In 1970 he was appointed a Member of the Commission of the European Communities. From 1974 to 1984 he was Director of the London School of Economics. He is the author of numerous books, including The Modern Social Conflict: Essay on the Politics of Liberty.
