The Abalone Alliance is committed to a permanent halt to the construction and operation of nuclear power plants in California. Since nuclear power is dangerous to all life, the Alliance encourages the real alternatives of conservation and safe, clean and renewable sources of energy. The Abalone Alliance was formed by activists statewide in 1977 to oppose the Pacific Gas and Electric's plans to build and operate the Diablo Canyon nuclear facility near San Luis Obispo. |

The Abalone Alliance continues to work on energy issues and to oppose the spread of nuclear power. They conduct research and provide information for consumers and activists working on these issues. Currently their work is focused on the effects of California's energy industry deregulation, including efforts to establish a consumer owned energy network (called a Municipal Utility District) in San Francisco. |
