Mission

The Green Party of California is a grassroots political party based on the principles of social justice, demilitarization and conversion to a civilian economy, ecological health, equality, diversity, community and participatory democracy. The San Francisco Green Party is part of a large and growing grassroots electoral movement, which is attempting to restore the democratic process and put people in office who truly are working in the best interests of the majority. The goal is to substantially change the nature of power in society, to work against those powerful groups who act primarily in the interests of their own power, and those who helped put them there. The Green Party organizes to put great public pressure on these groups so that they make concessions to the public good.

Issues

Environmentalism, Fair distribution of wealth, Civil liberties, Peace, Grassroots democracy, Democratic media, Fairer voting systems, Vastly reducing the influence of money in politics.

Activities

Using the electoral system to elect candidates or pass ballot initiatives that reflect Green values; Occasional lobbying, networking, and other forms of organizing designed to put pressure on currently seated legislators.

Programs/
Projects

The California and San Francisco Green Parties work for environmental justice through election campaigns, on-going working groups, local community actions and various forms of organizing. For example, the SF Transportation Working Group is focusing on transportation justice through increasing public transit service to underserved communities. The energy working group is fighting against power plant expansion and air pollution in Hunter's Point. One current policy campaign issue is supporting the renewable energy industry in California by stopping the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) from charging people who invest in renewable energy systems for their homes and businesses an extra $0.04-$0.06 per kilowatt hour. Another campaign supports Bill AB1058 (and opposes the auto lobby) which requires California's Air Resources Board to adopt regulations that achieve maximum feasible reduction of global warming emissions by passenger vehicles. The SF Green Party also hosts various issue-focus listserves and a message board.
