Appalachia: A Self-Portrait

(Frankfort, KY: Gnomon Press for Appalshop, 1979)
Edited by Wendy Ewald
Foreward by Robert Coles
Text by Loyal Jones

Wendy Ewald's early efforts in participant-generated photography appeared in this volume of life in Appalachia. In the role of editor, Ewald pushed documentary photography beyond its observer-centered limitations, effacing her presence as an artist in favor of facilitated self-representation. The subjects of the portrait and the subjects creating the portrait converge. The residents of this rural community are, in Robert Coles' words, "earnest and perceptive ... talented and decent photographers [who] have been at pain to respond with attentive affection and continuing concern to the proud people of a much misrepresented and historically significant part of the American Scene."
