Wendy Ewald
In this second of her three works related to Appalachia, Wendy Ewald captured the lives of four of her Kentucky neighbors. The photographs collapse the space between the camera and the women portrayed. These are women Ewald knows. A familiarity that comes with sharing their daily lives translates into her images. Accompanying the photographs are transcriptions of taped conversations with these three generations. Ewald comments, "They tell stories of relationships with men and children, of work, of desires and of changes in their society which occur everywhere, but because they live within the conventions of life in their communities they seem to have fewer choices and each decision or event seems more crucial."
