Brent MillikanBrent Millikan holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies and Latin American Studies from UC Santa Cruz and an M.A. in Geography from UC Berkeley.  His research combines political economy and human ecology approaches to the study of socio-environmental transformations in developing countries, with a particular focus on the Brazilian Amazon.  For over twenty years, he has lived and worked as a researcher, activist and consultant in Brazil, collaborating with academic institutions, NGOs and grassroots movements. He has carried out extensive research on social and environmental transformations in the western Amazonian state of Rondnia, with a particular interest in rural development and natural resource management projects financed by the World Bank.   Since 2000, he has worked mainly as a consultant, adviser and project coordinator with the federal Ministry of the Environment and state government of Acre, contributing to initiatives aimed at strengthening governance, livelihood strategies and resource conservation in the Amazon region.  While at Berkeley, his main activities will include: a) completion of a PhD dissertation on territorial planning and frontier development in the state of Rondnia, and b) collaboration with co-fellow Monica de los Rios in preparation of a training and policy dialogue workshop to be held in summer 2007, focusing on socio-environmental conflicts, governance and large infrastructure projects in the transportation and energy sectors within the MAP region of the western Amazon (Brasil, Bolivia, Peru).
