Brunei Darussalam in 1992: monarchy, Islam, and oil. (Brunei's economy, politics and foreign relations) (A Survey of Asia in 1992: Part II) Asian Survey v33, n2 (Feb, 1993):200 (4 pages). Abstract: Nineteen ninety two was a momentous year for Bruneians. It marked the 25th anniversary of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah's ascendancy to the throne and the inclusion of the Melayu Islam Beraja or Malay Islam monarchy in secondary school curriculum. Such effort to promote monoloyalty by emphasizing race and religion can be viewed as part of a government policy to maintain the political status quo. With its abundant supply of liquid natural gas, well-established ties with countries such as Singapore and Malaysia and greater participation in global affairs, Bruneians, indeed have many things to celebrate.

Haghayeghi, Mehrdad. Islam and democratic politics in Central Asia. World Affairs v156, n4 (Spring, 1994):186 (13 pages). Abstract: Newly independent nations in Central Asia are attempting to form viable democratic governments but former-communist leaders are hindering the process by repressing Islamic-democratic organizations. The West is not opposing this repression because of fears of Islamic fundamentalism but it fails to recognize that Islam is not automatically anti-Western. By allowing the repression, Western nations are increasing the likelihood of combined democratic-Islamic organizations' failing while also increasing the chances of anti-Western Islamic fundamentalism developing.

Marsot, Alain-Gerard. Political Islam in Asia: a case study. (Political Islam) Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science v524 (Nov, 1992):156 (14 pages). Author Abstract: The phenomenon of Islamic resurgence, the so-called fundamentalism, has had important political effects, but it is often viewed as a Middle Eastern issue just as Islam is essentially perceived as a Middle Eastern religion. In point of fact, the major Muslim nations are found in Asia, where most of the world's Muslims live. Islamic resurgence is also found, in various degrees, in all the countries of Asia where there are Muslims. The intensity and character of this phenomenon, however, depends on several factors, such as geography, historical background, and the relative size of the Muslim communities. While it is both a religious and a political phenomenon, as Islam itself, this Islamic resurgence should also be considered a response to the global issue of modernization and development, in all its complex and unsettling dimensions.
