Has the nation of South Africa played any significant role in operations within the UN during recent years?
Matt
South Africa, since its first independent election in 1994, has had a great deal to do in putting its own house in order. Nonetheless, Nelson Mandela and his successor Thabo Mbeki have played a very important role in resolving problems in Africa, [particularly] Libya and the Lockerbie trial and the current hostilities in and around the Congo. They are also playing a very helpful role in the current disturbances in Zimbabwe.
