Health

What measures has the UN taken towards the research of the finding a cure for AIDS?

Helena S., Marin Academy High School

The World Health Organization has a major worldwide program both for establishing the facts about the AIDS epidemic and for supporting different approaches to eventually finding a cure.

Do you feel that the World Health Organization has been effective in bringing attention and positive action to the HIV/AIDS pandemic, particularly in the sub-Saharan African nations? A lot of concern has been expressed, but has anything truly effective actually been done about it?

Jennifer Co, Model UN Program, UC Berkeley

I am not qualified to give an informed answer to this question. I am told, however, that under the new and extremely forceful leadership of the new Director General, Gro Brundtland of Norway, the organization is becoming far more effective in a number of vital fields.
