Application Procedure for IIS Dissertation Fellowships

You may hand-deliver all material or mail it to the Fellowship Coordinator, Institute of International Studies, 215 Moses Hall #2308, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94702-2308. All material except the transcript may be e-mailed as attachments to iis "at" globetrotter.berkeley.edu, or faxed to 510-642-9493. If you e-mail the waiver form, please note that it still must be signed by you and your advisor.

Required for all dissertation applications:

  1. Application form (cover sheet), downloadable in PDF or available from the Institute of International Studies.
  2. Dissertation proposal narrative, maximum 1600 words including any supporting material such as bibliography, footnoting, etc. (We do not recommend the inclusion of bibliographies.) The exact word count must be listed at the top right-hand corner of the first page of the narrative, along with your name and department. Narrative may be no longer than four pages total; do not include a title page. Narratives must be double-spaced and in a typeface no smaller than 10 point. Proposals that do not conform to these limits will not be distributed for review.
  3. Official transcript of courses taken as part of your graduate program. Transcript must arrived in a sealed envelope bearing the Registrar's Office seal, but may be hand-delivered or mailed by you. Departmental and website-generated transcripts are not accepted. Transcripts are also required for all graduate work at other institutions.
  4. One letter of recommendation from a UC faculty member with waiver form (included with the downloadable application cover sheet, linked above and at the bottom of this page). The waiver must be signed by you and by the faculty member.The recommendation should discuss the student's scholarly promise as well as the merits of the proposal itself.
  5. Curriculum vitae, maximum 2 pages.
  6. Required for all renewal applications:

  7. Report of progress made during the previous year, maximum 2 pages.

Deadline: The completed application package, including letter of recommendation, is due at the Institute of International Studies on April 7, 2008. This deadline is firm. Send all material to: Fellowship Coordinator, IIS; 215 Moses Hall #2308; Berkeley, CA 94720-2308.

Awards will be announced by the end of May.
