Dr. David Owen

David Owen

Dr. David Owen is a co-founder of the new Social Democratic Party (SDP) of Great Britain, which was established in 1981. He became leader of the SDP in June 1983 and currently represents the Social Democrats as a Member of Parliament for Plymouth, Devonport.

Dr. Owen served as Labour Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs from February 1977 to May 1979.

Since 1980, Dr. Owen has been a member of the Independent Commission on Disarmament and Security Issues, under the chairmanship of Olof Palme, and a member of the Independent Commission on International Humanitarian Issues sine 1983.


Petra Kelly

Petra Kelly

Petra Kelly, a leading member of the Green Party, served from March 198 to March 1984 as Speaker of the Green Party's parliamentary group. She continues to represent the Greens as a Member of the Bundestag (German parliament).

Ms. Kelly was the co-initiator of the Krefelder Appell against the stationing of Pershing II and cruise missiles in Europe and of the "Bertrand Russell Campaign for a Nuclear-free Europe."

General Gert Bastian

Gert Bastian

Gert Bastian became an officer in the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) in 1965 and rose to the position of brigadier and divisional commander.

On January 16, 1980, General Bastian resigned from the military because of his profound misgivings about NATO's decision regarding missile deployment. He was a co-initiator of the Krefelder Appell against the stationing of Pershing II and cruise missiles.

Since March 6, 1983, Gert Bastian has been a Member of the 10th German Bundestag (Parliament) as a representative of the Green Party. On February 9, 1984, he left the parliamentary group of the Greens, but continues to serve as a Member of Parliament.

Lord Carrington

Lord Carrington

Lord Carrington is Secretary General of NATO. He was British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs from 1979 to 1982.

In 1979, while serving as Secretary of State, Lord Carrington served as Chairman of the Lancaster House Conference, which led to the solution of the Rhodesian problem and the formation of the Independent Republic of Zimbabwe. From July to December 1981, he was President of the Council of Ministers of the European Community.


Paul C. Warnke

Paul c. Warnke

Paul C. Warnke has been a partner of the Washington, D.C., law firm of Clifford and Warnke since November 1978.

From March 1977 to November 1978, Mr. Warnke served as Director of the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency. During the same period, he also served as Chief U.S. Negotiator for the Strategic Arms Limitations Talks.
